NADA – Combating Food Waste in Madeira

The Vice-President of the Regional Government, Pedro Calado, and the Regional Secretary for Social Inclusion and Citizenship, Augusta Aguiar, were present today at a NADA project presentation titled, ‘No to Food Waste,’ in Bairro da Nazaré, Funchal.  The project is a joint partnership between the Regional Government and Casa do Voluntário Association, and aims to reduce the amount of food thrown away due to its lack of commercial value, even though it still retains it nutritional values.

In order to move forward, NADA have partnered up with various restaurants, cafes, bakeries, hotels, supermarkets and hypermarkets, which, due to the nature of their activity, generate food surpluses, which can be used and distributed to those in need. The distribution will be made through Casa do Voluntário Association through a network of public and private entities, which they hope will promote social inclusion and citizenship.

Although in its first phase, the project will ‘go live’ in the Nazaré Housing Complex, São Martinho, as a way of promoting solidarity and supporting the most vulnerable members of Madeira’s population.
