MEP João Ferreira has put to the European Commission the need for clarification on possible compensatory support to farmers for the damage caused by Wood Pigeons (Trocaz Pigeon), a protected endemic species, to their crops.
Talking to the European Commission, the MEP asked: “What information do you have regarding the conservation status of the wood pigeon population in the Autonomous Region of Madeira? And what EU support and compensatory measures can be implemented to help farmers harmed by the damage they cause.”
He went onto say that he has already met with farmers who claim that the Regional Government of Madeira has done nothing to help alleviate the problem and he is looking for solutions that protect both the farmer and the Trocaz Pigeon.
