We Will Not Confine Machico

The President of the Regional Government has confirmed that despite the increasing number of cases of Covid-19 he will not erect a security barrier around Machico, arguing that this measure could only be justified “if there was a lack of control and community transmission.” Even so, he said the situation  calls for scrupulous compliance with the rules and reaffirmed that strict inspections will be carried out on all bars and restaurants.

When questioned by journalists he said “I knew this was going to happen as I have access to confidential information, and that is why I said that we were going through, at this moment, one of the most complicated phases, with the greatest risks.”

However, the President considered that, “thanks to the work that has been undertaken by the Regional Health Directorate, we have well-developed information and action chains, and that what happened at Santa Casa da Misericórdia could have been much worse. We managed to contain the outbreak, but now it is essential that citizens residing in Machico, and above all entrepreneurs, adopt a very cautious approach and scrupulously comply with the rules applying to social distancing, the non-concentration of people, the use of a masks, hand hygiene, literally everything that is essential to contain these outbreaks not only in Machico and Santa Cruz but throughout the island.”
