Regional Government Assists Grape Farmers

Rafaela Fernandes, Regional Secretary for Agriculture and Environment, reiterated the commitment of the Regional Government of Madeira to increase €0.20/kg for grape farmers in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, producers of the Tinta Negra variety. An agreement was made at the meeting that the minister held with the winegrowers, which was also attended by the president of the Institute of Wine, Embroidery and Handicrafts of Madeira (IVBAM), Tiago Freitas, the President of Madeira Water and Waste (ARM), Amílcar Gonçalves, the Director of Planning and Territory (DROTe), Ilídio Sousa, and the president of the Parish Council of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, Gabriel Pereira.

The agreed increase will be associated, according to Rafaela Fernandes, with other measures to support grape farmers, which will allow a higher income for the sector.

During the meeting, farmers discussed other relevant issues including irrigated water, parceling, and the importance of regularizing the land.

The Regional Secretary thanked the Parish Council of Estreito de Câmara de Lobos for its availability for the actions already carried out and the collaboration it has shown for future actions, whose dates will be announced in due course. It has already been agreed that work needs to be carried out on support trellises, irrigation systems, and water reservoirs.
