Ecological Sustainability Taught in School

Local school EB1/ PE / C in Lombo do Guiné, located in Arco da Calheta, has installed a greenhouse in its garden for the biological cultivation of vegetables and/or fruits by its students.

This greenhouse is part of the schools ‘practical pedagogy,’ which meets the objectives of several of the schools subjects, such as the environment, mathematics, organic and sustainable agriculture, as well as promoting outdoor activities and an understanding of the land. This activity involves children and adults working together in different agricultural projects.

The greenhouse was built using monies donated by educator Manuel Rey and through a partnership with the Municipio da Calheta and Junta de Freguesia do Arco da Calheta.  The structure was completed on the 1st of October and already a bed of lettuces and other vegetables has been sown.

Furthermore, a composter has been built for recycling organic waste and the production of biological fertiliser.

In the opinion of the School’s director, Arlindo Carvalho, “the use of this greenhouse is part of the schools eco action plan and will be an asset for the students as classroom studies can now be applied in practice. As this parish has an agricultural tradition, our school will implement the daily practices of some families and simultaneously be a strategy for teaching environmental studies.
