Wind Constraints Airport Operationality

Weather conditions are conditioning operations at Madeira International Airport this afternoon, with several planes caught in holding patterns while waiting to attempt to land at Cristiano Ronaldo – Madeira International Airport.

Flightradar24 images show several aircraft in ‘holding’ along the east coast of Madeira, especially in the area between Caniçal and Porto da Cruz, in an attempt to wait for better conditions to approach the runway.

Among the most visible cases were flights from Brussels Airlines, Transavia, easyJet, and a private jet that flew multiple circuits before attempting to land.

The situation has already led to diversions with Wizz Air flight WZZ43Z, coming from Warsaw, being diverted to Tenerife South airport, in the Canary Islands, after not being able to land in Madeira.

The difficulties are related to the wind and the instability in the approaches to the Madeiran airport, a situation that usually affects mainly aircraft in the final phase of landing when there are stronger gusts or sudden changes in the intensity and direction of the wind.

At the beginning of the evening, several planes continued on a conditioned approach to Madeira Airport, with the possibility of further diversions or delays in the coming hours.

The ANAM website at 20:33 shows that the airport is working normally.
