A queue of tourists and residents waited with anticipation for the reopening of the Recommended Route 1 (PR1), which connects Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, crossing the central massif of Madeira. After recovery and renovation work in several areas, the trail is now accessible again in its entire length, allowing visitors and residents to walk along one of the island’s most iconic routes.
For now, access is subject to mandatory reservation through the Simplifica Portal, where registration must be made for Vereda do Areeiro, including the PR1, PR1.1, and PR1.2 routes. The measure aims to regulate the affluence and ensure greater safety along the route.
According to the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture, Eduardo Jesus, the route remains passable in both directions between Pico do Areeiro and the Pedra Rija viewpoint. However, from that point to Pico Ruivo, circulation becomes exclusively one-way.
