The petition “For the 100% Payment of the Sickness Allowance (Sick Leave) for Cancer Patients,” addressed to the Assembly of the Republic, has gained strong support and caught the community’s attention. Many are outraged by Parliament’s decision last Friday to reject bills that aimed to ensure full sickness allowance for cancer patients and strengthen their labour rights.
The petition, which in the last consultation carried out by JM already had more than 5,200 signatures, states that “currently, cancer patients in a situation of incapacity for work are covered by the general medical leave regime, which provides for partial compensation of income. This reality forces many people to choose between treating themselves properly or ensuring they provide for themselves and their families, which is socially unjust and humanly unacceptable.”
In this way, it demands that “all cancer patients have the right to sick leave paid at 100% of their reference remuneration during the period of clinical incapacity resulting from the disease and the respective treatments,” calling for “the State to formally recognise oncological disease as a situation that requires reinforced social protection, putting health and human dignity above loss of income.”
