Another case of “wild” camping in the heart of Funchal was denounced today by locals, in what is not an isolated incident. This is not the first time that tourists have erected tents next to the cable car, in an area close to the SAM bus stops, on Avenida do Mar and Comunidades Madeirenses.
The situation left several people stunned, as this time the tents were closed and the tourists were still fast asleep.
The episode has raised criticism regarding the lack of civility of some visitors, who insist on occupying urban spaces and areas not intended for this type of practice. The occurrence took place this Monday, but about a month ago, the authorities identified another group of wild campers in the same place.
Local newspaper, JM, has publicised several areas in the region where tourists have set up clandestine camps, including in protected and unsuitable areas. Similar cases continue to emerge.
Many have asked why the PSP remains powerless to move these people to designated camping areas.
