Supermarket Compliance Request

The Funchal City Council will provide the information requested by the JPP, at yesterday’s City Council meeting in relation to the licensing of food retail chains in the municipality. Asked about the process, Jorge Carvalho made it clear that “What belongs to the private sector should remain in the private sector, since they are regulated through the definition of different land use plans.”

The councilors elected by the JPP to the Funchal City Council today requested “detailed information,” referring to the last four years, on “all processes and requests for information related to food distribution chains, namely Lidl and other entities in the same sector, within the scope of licensing for the installation of stores in the municipality of Funchal.”

“As long as they comply with the regulations, we have nothing against it,” said the mayor, adding that the JPP has insisted on the Lidl issue, but that it was the company itself that understood that, in view of the market context, the installation in Funchal was not opportune. “It has nothing to do with the opinion of the Chamber to agree or not to agree,” he said.
