Despite the modest adherence to the protest against the Labour Package, the USAM leader highlighted the importance of the mobilisation, acknowledging that “in Madeira there is a structural difficulty in participating in protest actions, because ‘everyone knows everyone!”
Asked about the next steps, Alexandre Fernandes assured that “all forms of struggle are open,” including demonstrations, streets, and strikes, if the Government maintains the proposal without dialogue with the social partners.
“The Government has already shown that it has no desire to negotiate. The struggle will continue, and Lisbon Day shows that workers across the country are united in this cause,” concluded the trade unionist.
The demonstration in Funchal took place simultaneously with other initiatives in various regions of the country, on a day of national protest against the package of changes to labour legislation.
