Abandoned Neighbourhoods Cause Concern

Chega’s candidacy for the Municipality of Santa Cruz recently visited the Nogueira neighborhood in the parish of Camacha, where alarming situations of degradation, insecurity, and abandonment were identified, requiring an urgent response from local and regional authorities.

During the trip, litter was found strewn along the public roads as a result of the lack of regular collection and urban cleaning. Residents also reported the total absence of rat control actions, which increases the risk of pests and constitutes a serious threat to public health.

The lack of road safety is another problem that worries residents. The neighborhood’s roads do not have speed bumps or adequate signs, exposing children and the elderly to avoidable dangers daily, as many drivers do not respect speed limits.

The Chega team also verified the existence of homeless people without access to social support, which aggravates the situation of social vulnerability. Buildings in an advanced state of degradation were also observed, including vacant housing, which reinforces the feeling of abandonment and neglect on the part of the local government.

“Bairro da Nogueira is the mirror of the abandonment to which many Portuguese have been subjected. The Santa Cruz City Council has to assume its responsibilities and act now to restore dignity to these people,” said the Chega candidate, Agostinho Alves, to the Santa Cruz City Council.

Faced with this situation, Chega demands immediate intervention, with concrete measures that improve the conditions of hygiene, safety, and social support, and reaffirms its commitment to defending a more efficient, fair, and closer municipal management to the populations.

“Chega is not resigned to seeing Madeirans live in undignified conditions. We will fight so that each parish, each neighborhood, and each family has the conditions it deserves,” concluded the candidate.
