Temperatures will increase from Thursday and exceed 40 degrees in some regions of mainland Portugal, especially in the interior, according to forecasts released today by the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA).
“There is a tendency for the anticyclone, located in the Azores region, to intensify and extend in a crest to Central Europe from the 24th, causing a flow from the eastern quadrant and, consequently, a transport of a mass of hot and dry air over the Iberian Peninsula and the archipelago of Madeira,” explained the IPMA, in a statement.
Thus, after days “with temperatures close to, or slightly lower, than normal for the time of year on the continent,” which will continue at the beginning of this week, “a significant rise in air temperature is expected at the end of the week.”
In the archipelago of Madeira, maximum temperatures “may be around or even exceed 30°C, especially on the southern slope and in mountainous regions.”
The IPMA admits that there is still “some uncertainty in the intensity and duration of the episode, and the situation is under constant observation.
