New Road Layout Discussed in Machico

The PS Party’s candidacy for the Municipality of Machico has announced plans to restore two-way traffic on the Queimada road, between Água de Pena and Machico.

At a press conference, Hugo Marques, the candidate for the municipality’s presidency, shared that the project, planned for the next term, aims to resolve road access issues while creating a scenic promenade over the sea and additional parking for those living in Água de Pena.

The current councillor for Traffic, Planning, and Land Use emphasised the importance of this connection, highlighting that safety precautions will be taken to protect local ecosystems and Machico’s historic landscape.

“The proposed intervention integrates seamlessly with the landscape,” explained Hugo Marques in a press release. Who added, “that safety barriers will be reinforced, and a tree chain will be implemented to enhance the area’s beauty and protection.

The PS candidacy draft envisions repurposing the current carriageway and pavement space to restore two-way traffic. Alongside the road, an elevated walkway over the sea will be created, offering a new tourist attraction.

Hugo Marques also stated that parking spaces will be built at the entrance of Água de Pena, encouraging visitors to leave their vehicles and walk to Machico via the panoramic promenade, which he believes is practical and tourism-enhancing.
