Drop in Madeira Wine Sales

According to data provided by IVBAM – Institute of Wine, Embroidery and Handicrafts of Madeira, IP-RAM, released by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira, in the first nine months of 2024, the sale of Madeira wine was around 2,175.7 thousand litres, equating into sale revenues of approximately 14.4 million euros. Compared to the same period of the previous year, there was an increase of 1.5% in quantity, but a drop in value of 8.9%.

Between January and September 2024, sales in the Portuguese market reached 454.2 thousand litres and yielded 4.1 million euros (-0.4% and -1.0%, respectively, in the same period of the previous year), of which 352.2 thousand litres and 3.3 million euros were from sales made in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

Exports to the countries of the European Union totalled 1.1 million litres, generating an appreciation of 4.8 million euros, which represented year-on-year rates of change of +3.7% in volume and +1.3% in value. In turn, exports to Third Countries stood at 650.2 thousand litres, producing revenues of 5.5 million euros, reflecting changes of -0.6% and -20.6%, respectively.

In the European Union (EU) countries, significant increases in the Austrian and Dutch markets stand out, and sales to the French market – which remains the most important market in all EU countries – also grew, with variations of +9.7% and +8.5%, in quantity and value, respectively. On the negative side, Germany’s performance should be noted, with changes of -19.3% and -11.3%, in the same order, in quantity and value.

With regard to non-EU countries, of the three most important markets, Japan was the one with the least unfavourable development, although mixed, with an increase of 8.5% in quantities and a reduction of 7.0% in value. Decisive for the overall reduction, due to their weight, were the drops in sales to the United States (-5.4% in quantity and -27.9% in value) and to the United Kingdom (-21.7% in quantity and -32.9% in value).

Of the total sold in these nine months, 74.6% corresponded to bottled wine, sold on average at 7.93 euros/litre (8.81 euros/litre in the first nine months of 2023). The remaining wine was sold in bulk at an average price of 2.85 euros/litre (0.03 euros/litre more than in the same period last year).
