Russian Ships Monitored by Navy

During this week, the Navy put into practice a monitoring and follow-up operation of the Russian frigate Admiral Gorshkov and the squadron refueler Akademik Pashin that crossed the maritime areas of national interest and the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Madeira, towards the Mediterranean Sea.

At the same time, the logistics ship Ursa Major was accompanied throughout the Mainland EEZ between the 22nd and 23rd of July. It is a ship “known to be involved in the transport of material and sustainability of the Russian war effort,” revealed the Navy.

The Maritime Operations Centre coordinated with the Command of the Maritime Zone of Madeira the use of NRP Zaire, which began monitoring on the 20th of July,  while crew from the NRP Setúbal monitored the Continental EEZ until yesterday, the 23rd of July.

“The Navy, through these monitoring and surveillance actions, guarantees the defence and security of maritime spaces under national sovereignty, jurisdiction or responsibility, contributes to the protection of Portugal’s interests and its critical infrastructures and, at the same time, ensures compliance with international commitments assumed within the framework of the Atlantic Alliance.”
