The PAN Party has been monitoring the situation of the fish farming cages in Ribeira Brava, which were dragged towards the beach and pier due to bad weather.
This is not the first time that this has happened, having already happened previously in the Municipality of Calheta, and this issue should be investigated and measures taken with regard to their location and number of cages.
“PAN Madeira considers that, once it has happened, it should be an opportunity to rethink the way and place where the cages are placed, reconsider their size, and invest in environmental monitoring, a commitment made by the previous government. We advocate that there should be effective monitoring, namely concerning the environmental and landscape impact, and that these results should be discussed,” says PAN deputy, Mónica Freitas
PAN is also concerned about the possibility of the destruction of cables, which may have been left behind, and that, because they are made of plastic, and must be collected, ensuring the safety of species and the fight against marine pollution.
In conversation with Plataforma Azia, an organization that has played an active role in these issues, there is also a call for an investigation and assessment of the damage caused, both in terms of species preservation and possible contamination.
The party also mentions that it is important to implement immediate solutions, such as the removal of cages to preserve them, but defends the evaluation of measures to minimise environmental impact and the importance of raising awareness among the community and professionals about the procedures to be carried out in this type of situation.
