A man threw himself into the sea, in front of the pontoon of the Madeira Electricity Company yesterday, and is still missing.
Commander Rui Teixeira, captain of the Port of Funchal, confirmed to local newspaper, JM, that once the alert was raised the Maritime Police and the rescue authorities were immediately sent to the area, including divers, SANAS operatives, and a drone operator. However, poor visibility hindered the operation.
The man, believed to be in his 30s, had previously dived into the water, as reported by an eyewitness, then dived again and vanished. They also said that he could have been on drugs or drunk as his behaviour was visibly erratic.
The incident sparked a lot of interest from residents and tourists alike who all tried to locate the missing man.
