Manuel Neto, former President of the Jardim da Serra Parish Council, has expressed concern about how climate change has lead to a 60% loss of chestnut trees, and 70% of cherry trees in the area.
Focusing on the issue of climate change, Manuel Neto stated that this is an issue which deserves special attention, and political intervention. Praising the work that has been done by the City Council in this area, the former local mayor called for a greater strategic policy to address an already increasingly pressing problem.
It was later agreed that climate change and its negative impact on local agricultural economies is a global problem that everyone needs to address.
