A torrential downpour hit Prazeres on Saturday afternoon, the 31st of October, with the Portuguese Institute for Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) recording 11.8 mm of rain in just ten minutes.
Between 16:31 and 17:30, the station recorded 27.1 mm of rainfall, a total within the orange warning threshold.
The Ponta do Sol/Lugar de Baixo station also recorded significant rainfall, with 19 mm in one hour. This fell within the yellow warning range, but close to the orange warning threshold.
These were the only two stations in IPMA’s network on Madeira Island to record rainfall totals reaching weather warning thresholds by 18:00.
Of the island’s 18 stations, 12 recorded rain. On the south coast, only the easternmost stations remained dry, while Porto Moniz was the only station on the north coast to record rainfall.
A yellow warning for rain was due to come into force at 21:00 on Saturday, followed by an orange warning from 00:00 until 09:00 on Sunday, the 1st of November. Heavy rain and thunderstorms were forecast for the early hours and Sunday morning, with yellow warnings also covering the north coast and Porto Santo.
