Juntos pelo Povo (JPP) is seeking support from its European partners to restore a passenger ferry service between Madeira and mainland Portugal.
The proposal was discussed on Wednesday, the 23rd of September, when JPP secretary-general Élvio Sousa met Sandro Gozi, secretary-general of the European Democratic Party and a Renew Europe MEP, during Gozi’s visit to Madeira.
“We are counting on our European allies to bring back the ferry between Madeira and the mainland,” Sousa said after the meeting.
According to JPP, the two also discussed the European Commission’s strategy for the outermost regions, freight transport, housing, agriculture, energy, the environment and the cost of living. Sousa said closer cooperation with European partners could help bring Madeira’s transport links and the additional costs of its island location to the EU’s attention.
The meeting also covered the use of Article 349 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union, which allows for measures tailored to the outermost regions, as well as POSEI agricultural support, climate change and Madeira’s strategic role in the Atlantic.
Gozi sits on the European Parliament’s Committee on Regional Development and its Intergroup on Cohesion Policy and the Outermost Regions.
