The authorities are investigating a drone flight near Madeira International Airport – Cristiano Ronaldo after aerial footage of the airport was shared on social media.
DIÁRIO understands that the incident has been formally reported to the National Civil Aviation Authority (ANAC) and the Public Security Police (PSP) through Madeira Airport Security. The National Aeronautical Authority and ANA – Aeroportos de Portugal have also been informed.
The video includes several aerial views of Madeira Airport, including runway 05/23 and the surrounding area. Aircraft can be seen on the runway and taxiways, while some of the footage appears to have been captured from a considerable altitude close to the airport.
Its publication raised questions about the circumstances of the flight and whether the operator had obtained the necessary authorisation to fly in an area considered particularly sensitive for aviation safety.
When questioned publicly by another social-media user about operating a drone so close to the runway, the person who posted the footage claimed there were no restrictions in Madeira and referred to information provided by the application used to operate the drone.
However, information or limitations displayed by manufacturers’ applications do not determine whether a flight is legal. Such applications are not a substitute for official airspace regulations or the geographical restrictions governing unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).
The relevant authorities will now examine the precise circumstances of the operation, including the drone’s location and altitude, its proximity to the runway and aircraft, and whether any specific authorisation had been granted.
There is currently no evidence that the operator flew without authorisation or committed an offence. This is what the authorities are seeking to establish following the report.
The incident is considered particularly significant because of the drone’s apparent proximity to airport infrastructure and the potential risk that the improper use of drones can pose to aircraft and airport operations.
