Regional Government President Miguel Albuquerque has once again identified golf as the principal means of attracting visitors to Porto Santo outside the traditional summer season.
Speaking on Friday afternoon during the opening of Frutimade’s first fruit and vegetable shop on the island, Albuquerque said Porto Santo was experiencing a strong summer, with visitor numbers remaining considerable and hotels and restaurants reporting very good occupancy levels.
The positive period is expected to continue into September.
“I am very satisfied,” Albuquerque said, while acknowledging that the island must continue working to reduce its dependence on seasonal tourism.
The Regional Government believes expanding Porto Santo’s golf course will help attract visitors during the cooler months, when demand for beach holidays declines.
“We have to concentrate on making the months outside the beach season more attractive, and that will undoubtedly be through golf,” Albuquerque said.
He argued that an improved golfing offer could help Porto Santo attract higher-value tourism throughout more of the year and reduce its reliance on the busy summer period.
The €10.2 million expansion contract has already been awarded, with work expected to begin in October. The project will add nine holes to the existing course and is scheduled for completion by 2028.
Albuquerque described the development as the island’s central tourism project, particularly outside the summer months, when lower visitor numbers remain the Government’s greatest concern.
When asked about air connections, Albuquerque said Porto Santo’s routes were established but that negotiations with TAP must continue to ensure direct flights are maintained during the winter. Reliable winter connections are essential if the island is to attract visitors outside its principal holiday season and support businesses operating throughout the year.
Albuquerque also identified investment at Porto Santo Airport and the second phase of the island’s new health unit among the Government’s priorities. The health project is as important for residents’ quality of life and for efforts to establish Porto Santo as a high-quality destination for permanent residents.
The new health centre and expanded golf course are expected to be completed by 2028.
