The president of Paul do Mar Parish Council, Paulo Rodrigues, has clarified the situation at Praia da Quebrada after a woman and child reportedly came into contact with a sea anemone.
In a social media post, Rodrigues expressed his sympathy for those affected but stressed that sea anemones are not exclusive to the beach.
He explained that the marine animals attach themselves to rocky seabeds and are commonly found in coastal areas with clean water and natural surroundings. Their presence does not mean the beach is dangerous or has poor water quality. However, visitors should take extra care in rocky bathing areas, particularly at low tide.
Signs at the beach already provide information about marine organisms and advice on what to do following contact. The council is now reinforcing this information as a precaution.
“We cannot control nature, but we can remain vigilant, provide information and signage, and seek to be increasingly helpful to people,” Rodrigues said.
Local authorities will continue to monitor Praia da Quebrada, which Rodrigues described as one of the parish’s most important natural attractions. He also urged visitors to use the beach responsibly and help preserve the area.
