Madeira’s south coast and mountainous regions are under weather warnings for hot temperatures, with the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) urging residents and visitors to take precautions during the coming days.
The south coast is under a yellow warning for hot weather until 18:00 on Wednesday, August the 5th, due to the persistence of high maximum temperatures.
In the mountainous regions, conditions are considered more severe. An orange warning, the second-highest alert level, is in force until 18:00 on Tuesday, after which it will be downgraded to a yellow warning until 18:006 pm on Wednesday.
The north coast of Madeira is not currently covered by any weather warning.
The prolonged hot weather has also increased the risk of rural fires. According to the IPMA, the mountainous areas in the eastern part of Madeira face a maximum fire risk until Wednesday, while western mountainous areas are under high to very high fire danger.
The IPMA’s Fire Weather Index (FWI) combines six meteorological indicators to assess the likelihood of wildfire ignition and spread based on weather conditions and the dryness of forest fuels.
Authorities are urging the public to adopt preventive measures, particularly in rural and forested areas. People are advised to avoid activities that could spark a fire and to exercise extra caution during the hottest part of the day.
The IPMA also recommends keeping up to date with the latest weather forecasts and warnings as conditions may change.
