The New Right party has criticised the suspension of plenary sessions in the Legislative Assembly of Madeira during August and September, arguing that it leaves the Regional Government without effective parliamentary scrutiny for almost two months.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the party said that, while a permanent committee remains in place to deal with urgent matters, other issues are left without parliamentary examination. It argued that because the Regional Government and the public administration continue to operate throughout the year, the absence of deputies constitutes a privilege incompatible with the constitutional principle of equality.
Among its proposals is the temporary replacement of sitting deputies by alternates from their respective electoral lists during the summer recess, allowing the Assembly to remain fully operational.
The New Right also announced that it intends to request a meeting with the President of the Legislative Assembly to present its proposals. In addition, it has offered to provide volunteers to observe parliamentary proceedings during the recess and has invited other parties without parliamentary representation to join the initiative, with participation proportionate to the votes they received in the last regional elections.
The party said there are several issues that, in its view, require urgent parliamentary attention, including petitions relating to alleged overdevelopment and the suspension of Funchal’s Municipal Master Plan (PDM).
The statement concludes with an appeal for what it describes as “seriousness in popular representation” and criticises episodes such as the promotional trip to Florida linked to the promotion of Madeira as a cryptocurrency destination.
