Child Injured in Hit-and-Run

The Public Security Police (PSP) have launched an investigation following a serious hit-and-run incident in the municipality of Ribeira Brava late yesterday afternoon. Authorities are currently searching for the vehicle’s driver, who fled the scene without stopping to assist.

The accident occurred while a nine-year-old child and her mother were walking together when a vehicle struck them both. While the mother was later evaluated at a health centre as a precautionary measure, the child sustained serious injuries.

Following the accident, emergency services were immediately dispatched to the site, including the PSP and the Volunteer Firefighters of Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol. However, before emergency teams could complete the transfer, a bystander stepped in to transport the child to the local health centre. Upon assessment at the Ribeira Brava Health Centre, the child was transferred via a Portuguese Red Cross (CVP) ambulance to the Paediatric Emergency Service at Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital in Funchal.

Medical reports indicate the child suffered suspected head trauma, as well as injuries to the pelvis and lower limbs. She remains in a serious condition at the hospital.

The PSP’s road accident investigation team is actively working to identify and locate the driver. Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to contact the local authorities immediately.
