A case of meningococcal meningitis was reported at Santana Elementary School, according to Antena 1 Madeira and confirmed by East Zone health delegate João Vieira Martins on public radio. The patient is a secondary school student who was diagnosed last week and has been receiving treatment since Thursday. The student’s family has also begun preventive medication.
The case is being monitored by the health authority, which carried out a risk assessment with the student’s close contacts, the doctor explained to Antena 1 Madeira. João Vieira Martins expressed confidence that there will be no new cases in the school community. According to the health delegate, the infection may be associated with a possible drop in immunity, although the young man is considered healthy.
The risk assessment has been completed, and the measures deemed appropriate have been implemented, he added.
JM has contacted the Regional Secretariat for Health and Civil Protection for more information.
