The President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, once again criticised the new Social Mobility Subsidy model for air travel as a “bureaucratic hell.”
During the PSD-Madeira and PSD-Azores Parliamentary Summit, Miguel Albuquerque emphasized that the main priority should be making access to the SSM simple, ensuring people only pay the face value of tickets without dealing with unnecessary bureaucracy. “As long as paying the face value is straightforward and we’re not stuck in the bureaucratic nightmare we face now, it’s all positive,” he said, responding to Azores President José Manuel Bolieiro’s suggestion in a DIÁRIO interview to turn the Azores Tariff into an island tariff for travel between Madeira, the Azores, and the mainland.
The Madeiran President considers that the recent changes made to the model have created “an absolute confusion, generating frustration among users.” According to Albuquerque, the situation is causing “malaise and wear and tear” in families who need to travel between the Region and the mainland.
“I suggest creating a transitional system, which I support. Enhance the current platform, but return to the previous one that relied on the Post Office, especially for people my age and older who struggle to understand this system. The current setup uses advanced technology, but many people simply don’t know how to use it,” he stressed.
