Porto Santo: Wettest March Since 1961

For Porto Santo, March 2026 was marked by below-average temperatures and above- average rainfall, concludes the Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA).

According to the IPMA climatological bulletin, the four reference stations recorded average air temperature values lower than the climatological normal (1991–2020). The stations of Chão do Areeiro and Santana stood out for the sharpest deviations, with anomalies of -2.3 °C and -1.6 °C, respectively, corresponding to the lowest values since 2000.

The national meteorological service also states that new extremes were recorded during this time, namely the lowest minimum temperature values in nine stations and the lowest maximum temperature in six meteorological stations.

According to the IPMA, precipitation levels were above average at all reference stations. Notably, Porto Santo recorded 127.6 mm of rainfall, marking the highest total for March since 1961.
