The Portuguese Labour Party (PTP) today criticised the economic impact studies released by the Regional Government of Madeira on the future Faial golf course, in Santana, stating that believing in the numbers presented “is the same thing as believing in Santa Claus.”
At stake are evaluations that point to an annual return of around 10 million euros, based on studies commissioned by the executive itself. For the PTP, the “data has no credibility and only serves to support the decision to move forward with public investment”.
“The government suddenly discovered a passion for golf, and, as if by magic, all studies now guarantee millions in returns. It’s convenient,” scoffs Raquel Coelho.
The PTP also recalls the “history of the Region concerning the reliability of financial and statistical information, namely the case of Madeira’s debt concealment, which prompted criticism and requests for sanctions by European entities, due to the tampering of data.”
