Porto Santo Treated to North Korea Style Visit

The Portuguese Labour Party (PTP) considers that “the recent visit of the 23 deputies from the Assembly of the Republic to the Autonomous Region of Madeira was nothing more than a political cosmetic operation promoted by the Regional Government, which used PSD officials as tour guides.”

“Everything was carefully set up to display a partial and politically convenient reality,” states a party press release. Furthermore, “The itinerary was chosen down to the millimetre: EEM, the Porto Santo Golf course and the desalination plant — all duly framed in the ‘green’ discourse of sustainability. A staged visit, where only what matters is shown. The failures remaining outside the visit’s agenda.”

For Raquel Coelho, “this theatre is reminiscent of the guided tours of the closed regimes, of North Korea, where foreign delegations only see the official reality.”

The PTP is surprised, for example, that the algae factory in Porto Santo, “a millionaire investment with no visible return for the population actually deserved a visit. And surely after visiting the factory and learning that it has lost over 54.1 million euros, the Minister for the Environment and Energy Commission would have asked awkward questions like ‘why?’
