Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) deputy Filipe Sousa expressed condolences to the victims of the recent storms, which, over the last two weeks, have caused death, destruction, and significant damage in several regions of the country.
In a press release, the parliamentarian expressed “the deepest solidarity” with families.
Filipe Sousa argues that extreme phenomena have exposed the country’s structural weaknesses in terms of planning, prevention, and State response, criticising the repetition of promises and the insufficiency of measures to support the affected populations.
The deputy elected by Madeira therefore proposes the creation of a permanent national fund for natural disasters, which allows for quick, transparent, and effective responses to victims. He went on to say:
“A permanent, robust and transparent instrument, which allows for quick and fair assistance to all those who suffer losses. A fund that does not depend on media pressure, nor on the circumstantial goodwill of those who govern, but that is a structural commitment to the Portuguese. We cannot continue to live at the mercy of improvisation, much less accept that each storm is treated as an absolute surprise, when we know that extreme phenomena are increasingly frequent, and allow victims to be pushed into bureaucratic labyrinths as they try to rebuild their lives.”
