IPMA Predict Wind and Rain

The Portuguese Institute of Atmosphere and Sea (IPMA) predicts a rainy and windy New Year’s Eve,  due to the influence of weather systems coming from the North Atlantic.

According to the IPMA, between the 29th and 31st of December, the weather will be marked by the passage of low-intensity fronts, with periods of heavy rain, especially from the afternoon of the 29th and during the dawn and morning of the 31st.

The prediction is rain on New Year’s Eve; the precipitation probability varies between 70 and 90%, including the Funchal region. Rain is less likely to affect Porto Santo, with figures reaching less than 30%.

The weather situation is expected to worsen on the 1st of  January. The IPMA indicates that, from the morning, there may be “sometimes heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms,” especially on the southern slope and in the higher areas of the island of Madeira, with the possibility of occasional hail.

The wind will be mostly from the south quadrant, weak to moderate, but may blow strongly in the highlands. At the end of the 31st, the wind is expected to intensify, with gusts reaching 70 km/h, and up to 90 km/h in the highest areas.
