Security Gate Vandalised

The security gate that prohibits access to Vereda – PR1 – Vereda do Areeiro was torn off its hinges this morning and thrown down the mountainside.

The Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) reported that it detected this situation early and successfully prevented hikers from walking along the path.

IFCN President Manuel Filipe Bemoaned this senseless vandalism and reminded people that the gate is there for everyone’s safety, since the route classified PR1 – Vereda do Areeiro, which connects  Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, is undergoing essential maintenance works.  “This type of behaviour jeopardises not only the work of the IFCN teams, but above all the safety of those who use our recommended walking routes.”

Manuel Filipe emphasises the importance of everyone understanding and respecting the safety rules and recommendations issued by the IFCN. He explains that these warnings are not arbitrary but are based on rigorous technical evaluations designed to prevent serious accidents. He also confirmed that the Forest Police presence will increase in the coming days, and fines will be issued for non-compliance.

The gate has already been removed from the slope.
