Madeira’s President, Miguel Albuquerque, insists that the controversy involving the Secretary of Tourism and Culture, Eduardo Jesus, is “closed,” stating that an apology has been made to the ALRAM President, who represents all deputies.
While talking to reporters, the President asked them not to be alarmists and discuss the incident on social network feeds.
That may be so, but the problem is far from over.
A public petition “We demand the resignation of the Regional Secretary of Madeira for Misogynistic Statements” has already been signed by more than 1,400 people, about 48 hours after it was posted on the www.peticaopublica.com portal.
The site, “which provides a free public service for all Portuguese to support the causes they believe in and create online petitions, has several others in progress.
During the debate on the Regional Budget, the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment, and Culture of Madeira’s made comments that were seen as misogynistic, offensive, and completely unacceptable in a democratic State of Law, with many stating that his behaviour cannot be ignored, relativised or excused by those who have public responsibilities.Â
Those standing against Eduardo Jesus are not only demanding his resignation as the Regional Secretary for Tourism, Environment and Culture, but also demand a firm public position against misogynistic and aggressive attitudes within the political arena.”
