Lack of Basic Sanitation

“There are still localities in Funchal without access to basic sanitation.” This is the finding of the CDU (United Democratic Coalition) visit to the parish of Santo António today.

On the occasion, Ricardo Lume considered that “it is unacceptable that in the 21st century, there are several locations in the municipality of Funchal where residents continue to be deprived of an essential right: access to a basic sanitation network, a fundamental condition for human development.” He stated, pointing out that the Levada do Pico do Cardo de Dentro, in Santo António, it is one of those examples.

“The nauseating smell, the proliferation of flies and other insects are just some of the problems faced by the residents of this area for several years. This is a serious public health situation, since the waste produced in homes is thrown directly into the levadas, generating environmental and health consequences,” describes the CDU, in a statement.

It should also be noted that Ricardo Lume denounced that “the Funchal City Council is untrue when it states that 92% of the municipality has sewage network coverage. Much less is the promise that, with the construction of the new WWTP, this coverage will reach 99% credible.”

Addressing reporters, Ricardo Lume, stated:

“We will take it upon ourselves and involve residents in carrying out a rigorous survey of the localities in the municipality of Funchal that still do not have access to the sewage network and basic sanitation.
