Fire at Avista Restaurant

The General Director of the Avista restaurant, of the Cliff Bay group, told local media outlet, JM today that the fire that occurred this afternoon was limited to a “technical area,” where the support equipment for air conditioning and fans are located, and that it did not pose a danger to employees or customers.

“We were right at the beginning of the operation, we only had a couple of customers, so we just had to evacuate the employees, and in two or three minutes they were removed from the restaurant,” said António Pais, who praised firefighters for their prompt action.

António Pais said he did not know, for now, the causes of the fire, and avoided commenting on whether it would have been human error, the overheating of some equipment, or another cause.  However, he did admit that he hopes that he will have a better idea of what happened when the firefighters have finished their investigation.

When asked when the restaurant would reopen, he said he did not know, as they will have to determine the material damage first, and at the moment, he cannot say when the restaurant will open again.
