Too Many Cars, Too Little Space

The ADN – National Democratic Alternative (ADN) party has warned of what it considers to be a “lack of control on the entry of motor vehicles into the Autonomous Region of Madeira.”

In a press release, the ADN cites a source, who is a customs secretary at the Funchal Customs, who reports that “during the year 2024, 12,094 vehicles entered the Autonomous Region of Madeira, while only 2,360 were returned to the mainland. Leaving 9,734 too many cars on our geographically limited island.”

Between the 1st of January and the 31st of May this year, 4,749 vehicles have already been cleared by customs.  Most of these new cars are intended for the rent-a-car market,” indicates the ADN, calling on the competent authorities to supervise the number of cars that each company has, ensure there are enough parking spaces, and understand what will happen to high milage cars that are no longer of any use to the company.

Concluding, the ADN states:

“At this rate, with the alarming vehicle entry into the island, Madeira, is becoming unbearable in terms of traffic.  The byproduct is more accidents, impassable roads, and the consequent pollution and destruction of our natural areas that should be better protected by those who hold positions of responsibility.”

The party also considers it important to take into account the number of cars that are scrapped so that we can finally get an idea of the number of cars circulating in the Autonomous Region of Madeira.”
