The Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM) has released for the Autonomous Region of Madeira (RAM), information on the causes of death in 2022, by municipality, age group, and sex.
According to the data available, in 2022, there were 3,104 deaths of residents in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which represents an increase of 8.0% compared to 2021 (2,875 deaths).
Of these deaths, 1,454 were male and 1,650 female, so the ratio of male deaths to female deaths was 88.1 male deaths per 100 female deaths, a value lower than that recorded at the national level, of 98.6. In the year under review, the mortality rate per 1,000 inhabitants in the Autonomous Region of Madeira was 12.3%.
By age group, there were 3 deaths of children under 1 year old, corresponding to an infant mortality rate of 1.7%. Among the causes of death are 2 due to congenital malformations and 1 due to ‘Endocrine, nutritional and metabolic diseases.
DREM also indicates that, among children’s deaths, there was one death of a child aged between 5 and 9 years old, whose cause of death was ‘Transport accident.’
In the age group of 20 to 64 years, DREM accounted for 567 deaths (18.3% of the total), highlighting deaths from ‘Malignant tumors’ (192 deaths), ‘Diseases of the circulatory system’ (124 deaths) and ‘External causes of injury and poisoning’ (79 deaths).
Between 65 and 79 years of age, there were 910 deaths (29.3% of the total), with mortality from ‘Malignant tumours’ continuing as the main cause of death (258 deaths), followed by mortality from ‘Diseases of the circulatory system’ (218 deaths) and ‘Diseases of the respiratory system’ (118 deaths).
At the municipality level, and in proportional terms, the municipality of Funchal recorded 1,345 deaths (43.3%), followed by Santa Cruz with 396 deaths (12.8%) and Câmara de Lobos with 315 deaths (10.1%).
These municipalities accounted for 66.2% of the deaths in the Autonomous Region of Madeira. While the municipalities of Porto Moniz (46 deaths, 1.5%), Porto Santo (62 deaths, 2.0%), and São Vicente (76 deaths, 2.4%) stood out for having fewer than 100 deaths in 2022, totaling 5.9% of deaths. The cause of death due to “Diseases of the circulatory system” stood out as the main cause of death in all municipalities, except in Câmara de Lobos, Santa Cruz, Santana, and Porto Santo. In these 4 municipalities, the main cause of death was due to Malignant tumors, highlights DREM.
It further indicates that in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, in 2022, Diseases of the circulatory system continued to be the main cause of death, with 787 deaths, corresponding to 25.4% of the total number of deaths. The mortality rate from this cause of death was 3.1% in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, which is lower than that observed at the national level (3.2%).
By municipality, this rate was higher in Porto Moniz (6.0%), followed by Calheta (5.9%) and São Vicente (4.3%). The municipalities of Porto Santo (1.5%), Santa Cruz (2.0%), and Câmara de Lobos (2.2%) were the ones with the lowest mortality rates from this cause of death.
DREM also states that mortality from “Malignant tumours” was the second most common cause of death in the Autonomous Region of Madeira in 2022, with 657 deaths, corresponding to 21.2% of all deaths and a mortality rate from malignant tumours of 2.6%, a rate lower than the national rate of 2.7%.
The municipalities of Funchal (291 deaths) and Santa Cruz (102 deaths) were the ones with the highest number of deaths from this cause. In the remaining municipalities, the number of deaths was less than a hundred, with Porto Moniz standing out with only 6 deaths. In terms of mortality rate, the municipalities of Santana (4.2%), Calheta (3.5%), Machico (2.8%), Funchal (2.7%), and São Vicente (2.7%) were the ones with the highest rates and above the regional average (2.6%). The lowest rate was observed in the municipalities of Ponta do Sol (1.6%) and Porto Santo (1.9%).
DREM notes that mortality from malignant tumors was higher than mortality from diseases of the circulatory system in the municipalities of Santa Cruz (+15 deaths), Santana (+4 deaths), Porto Santo (+2 deaths) and Câmara de Lobos (+1 death), while in Santana cancer was the main cause of death in 2022.
