Increased Road Traffic

The weighted average daily traffic on the Madeira Expressway increased by 6.0% in the first quarter of 2025, compared to the same period of the previous year. The information was released by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira (DREM), based on data from the Regional Directorate of Roads (DRE).

According to the statement, “in the 1st quarter of 2025, the road traffic count increased by 4.7% on the Expressway and 5.2% on the roads, compared to the same period in 2024.”

DREM also adds that “on the concession roads, light vehicle traffic increased on both (+4.7% on the Expressway; +5.1% on Expressways).” Heavy traffic also recorded growth, “on the Expressway (+5.8%) and the roads (+8.0%).”

On average, “around 37.3 thousand vehicles were registered, in daily average terms, on the Expressway and 7.0 thousand on the roads, meaning year-on-year increases of 6.0% and 6.9%, in the same order.” DREM highlights that “it was the evolution of light vehicle traffic (+6.0% on the Expressway; +6.8% on Expressways) which determined the total variation,” since “the reduced expression of heavy vehicle traffic (representing, respectively, 2.2% and 2.1% of the total) had little impact on the evolution of the indicator as a whole.”

Even so, “heavy traffic increased by 6.8% on the Expressway and 11.5% on the roads,” the statement concludes.
