The Public Security Police (PSP) approached several young people who were in the Praça do Povo Gardens, Funchal.
Under close scrutiny from passers-by, the PSP agents talked at length with the young people, while other agents carried out a thorough search of their belongings.
Most of the young people appeared to be students, although the group also included older people, who were definitely not students.
Reasons for the search have not been disclosed, but many believe it is a move to combat drug trafficking and consumption in the Funchal area.
Once the search was over the students were left to enjoy the sunshine.
