Flooded roads, raised manhole covers, wet passers-by, and motorists on the verge of a nervous breakdown. This is a summary of what was experienced in Funchal yesterday, after a period of heavier than predicted rain hit Madeira.
Rush hour in Funchal was miserable as people complained to JM journalists that the roads were near impassible due to water puddling, while shifting manhole covers became a driver’s nightmare as they tried to avoid them.
Public transport users also complained that bus shelters were inadequate, as they leak.
The rain was predicted by the IPMA, which had placed Madeira under a yellow alert.
