Fanal Needs to be Protected

In a press release, the sole deputy of political party, PAN, emphasises the position adopted by the Secretariat of the Environment in the authorisation granted for a private event in the protected area of Fanal.

Mónica Freitas says it is an “irresponsible” attitude and stresses that Madeirans have a duty to preserve the natural heritage of the archipelago. This, it should be understood, in an allusion to the words spoken by Miguel Albuquerque who said that “protected areas are to be enjoyed.”

“We are not talking about a wedding that was made in any space, we are talking about UNESCO heritage that we are so proud to have and that we must do everything to maintain its integrity and preservation. Even if it was in the parking area, no precedents can be set,” says Mónica Freitas.

The PAN announced on Tuesday that it would file a complaint with UNESCO, which, in the meantime, has already been formalised.

“We will see what UNESCO’s interpretation of the use of this space for a wedding. The images shocked the Madeirans for the amount of garbage, the noise pollution that was provided and the total disrespect for our nature, which cannot be used at any cost,” observes, the parliamentarian.
