The MSC Aries cargo ship seized by Iran near the Strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf is registered in Madeira.
This was confirmed by the national government, in a statement issued this afternoon, in which it further assured that the Portuguese authorities are already monitoring the situation, under the direct coordination of the Prime Minister’s office, involving the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Presidency, National Defence and Economy, who are in contact with the Iranian entities.
However, the ship’s owner Zodiac Maritime Limited, is based in London.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Portuguese further informed that “there is no record of any Portuguese citizens on board, either crew or command.”
