In a press release, Nuno Morna, deputy of the Liberal Initiative, expressed the party’s “environmental concerns” regarding the Curral das Freiras cable car.
The deputy accuses the IFCN of having signed, in September, the contract for the design, construction, and conservation of a cable car system, an adventure and nature interpretation park, and a “zip line” (slide), including the respective support and catering facilities, in the Curral de Freiras area, Câmara dos Lobos, recalling that, on several occasions, the IL has spoken out “against the construction of this megalomania.”
“This project will disfigure a protected area with a unique landscape, in addition to threatening the nesting areas of an endemic bird at risk, the Nun of Madeira,” warns Nuno Morna, recalling that the project “has been classified by the proposing and licensing entities, already listed, as an asset of public utility, which allows a drastic reduction in the amounts to be paid to the State in taxes, namely VAT.”
Nuno adds that these “carriages of 50 people connecting the Montado do Paredão to Jardim da Serra and 15 people from the Montado do Paredão to Curral das Freiras” translate to “flying buses buzzing over the parish.”
With this, IL considers that the Institute “which should take care of the natural heritage of our land is clearly colluding with interests that we do not see.”
“Claiming accessibility, with a connection already announced by the Secretary of Equipment and Infrastructures, which will unite Curral das Freiras to Jardim da Serra, ensuring true connections between the parish and the outside, this one, with true public utility, makes no sense at all”, adds the deputy.
Therefore, Nuno Morna reports that “the Parliamentary Representation of the Liberal Initiative delivered a Proposal for a Resolution that, if approved by ALRAM, recommends to the Regional Government that it immediately suspend the Tender Procedure 16888/2022, of December 21, and abandon the idea of building a cable car system, an adventure and nature interpretation park and a “zip line” and respective support and catering facilities, in the area of Curral de Freiras.”
