Global Phenomenon Affects Dragon Trees

Last updated on 5th July 2023

A worldwide phenomenon has been affecting the phytosanitary status of Dragoeiros, and today the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN), within the scope of its competencies, reported that this phenomenon is also being felt in the Region. This was possible due to the various monitoring actions carried out on several specimens of the archipelago, taking into account some of the changes that the species has presented.

Thus, the IFCN guaranteed to have in the field a set of actions that, in addition to visual observation, include the collection of plant material and soil for laboratory analysis in order to find answers and solutions to overcome this situation.

“An external entity was even asked for complementary studies on this issue, which is transversal to many areas of Macaronesia,” a spokesperson for the institute said.

For now, of the work already carried out and in progress, the IFCN found that the decrease in atmospheric humidity, coupled with the absence of organic substrate in the soil, maybe some of the factors that are harming the development of this species.

“On the other hand, it is verified that in the areas where the edaphoclimatic conditions have been maintained, whether in Madeira or Porto Santo, the Dragoeiros present a balanced vegetative development.”
