A new hybrid orchid has been created and named after the city of Funchal.
This is not the first, as several other new hybrid orchids grown in Madeira have been named after municipalities – Ribeira Brava, São Vicente, Calheta, and Câmara de Lobos.
“Registered and certified by the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society) on the 13th of June 2023, this is the fruit of a work of dedication, care, research, and a lot of waiting and patience. Although it has only been 3 years since the sowing of this hybrid and its registration, it is always nerve-wracking as someone on the other side of the world can be creating the same hybrid.” Stated a press release issued by Madeira Orchids.
The press release also gave some details about the new orchid, stating that it is a vigorous plant, easy to grow, and with semi-pendant size flowers flowing like pompons.

The orchid is officially known as ‘Dendrobium Sunset in Funchal.’
