Reservoir Repairs and a New Public Sports Park Initiative

A tender will be launched between March and April this year for the waterproofing of the main Palheiro Ferreiro reservoir.  The reservoir belongs to the Regional Government and supplies the Palheiro Ferreiro golf course and surrounding area.

The restoration work is budgeted at 2 million euros plus VAT and is expected to be completed by the autumn/winter of 2024.

While discussing the project, the President of Madeira, Miguel Albuquerque, stated:

“The tender for the work is part of our community framework and will ensure that the lagoon becomes fully operational and less prone to water wastage through leakages.  The project is vital, as the reservoir supplies the surrounding area and is an essential resource for both the Palheiro gardens and the golf course; an area of outstanding natural beauty and an essential component of Madeira’s tourism.

Furthermore, the President confirmed that some repair work will be carried out before the summer of 2023, enabling the reservoir to operate at 30% of its capacity.

When fully operational, the lagoon has a capacity of approximately 120 million litres of water.

Public sports park

During their discussion, a new public sports park in Palheiro Ferreiro was discussed.

“There is 100,000 m³ of flat ground which will be ideal for a public sports ground.” Stated Miguel Albuquerque, who went on to say that it is “very important that the Regional Government works closely with the owners of Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro as a new modern sports facility will benefit those living in Funchal and Santa Cruz.”
