Following coverage of the incident by the BBC and UK regional newspapers, the tourist who went missing in Calheta this week has been identified as 52-year-old Cumbrian Fell Runner, Darren Kay.
Mr Kay was on holiday in Madeira with his partner. They had both been out for a two-hour run when Mr Kay decided to run for another half an hour. He has not been seen since then.
On hearing the news, Mr Kay’s family confirmed that they are travelling to Madeira to help with the search.
